As a John Cusack fan, I hate to say this, but The Raven was a pretty disappointing experience from soup to nuts (it’s a phrase – google it).  The film never managed to live up to its premise, nor any of the work for which the writer it claimed to be depicting was famous.   It was lackluster enough that I have decided to skip writing a full review, so just accept this for my final word on the matter: Meh.

The trailers were not terrible, in fact some were awesome.  The problem?  I had seen all but one before.  In fact, I have already included all but two of them in previous “Before the Movie” posts.   So, for YouTube videos of Looper, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Savages and Chernobyl Diaries, click here.

The only other trailers presented before The Raven in my theater were as follows. (Descriptions in italics are from IMDB, videos from YouTube).

House at the End of the Street

A mother and daughter move to a new town and find themselves living next door to a house where a young girl murdered her parents. When the daughter befriends the surviving son, she learns the story is far from over.

Directed by relative newcomer Mark Tonderal and staring new it-girl, Jennifer Lawrence and it-girl from the 80s and 90s, Elizabeth Shue, this movie looks…well, honestly, it looks like the kind of thing we have seen before.  This is one I will holding off on until I see some good reviews, if there are any to be had.  Release date: Sept. 21, 2012

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World

As an asteroid nears Earth, a man finds himself alone after his wife leaves in a panic. He decides to take a road trip to reunite with his high school sweetheart. Accompanying him is a neighbor who inadvertently puts a wrench in his plan.

Directed by another relative newcomer (to directing anway), Lorene Scafaria, both the premise and the preview are far more promising for this film.  Here’s to hoping it pulls it off in long form.  The fact that it stars Steve Carell and Keira Knightly should help.  Release date: June 22, 2012

Well, that was it. That was all the new stuff I got.  Yeah, I was disappointed too.  Very likely, the next movie I will see in theaters will be The Avengers.  While there is literally nothing on the planet that could excited me as much as its impending release, I am pretty sure there will be some A-list trailers before it, as well.  Check back next week to find out!
