As  summer 2012 passes its mid-point, the movies released have continued to WOW, but the trailers/previews before them have started to loose some of the exciting punch they had back in May and June.  Not because they are bad, just because we’ve seen them all before.  The Dark Knight Rises is the perfect example of the rule: an amazing movie with almost exclusively ‘Aw, man. I’ve seen this before!’ trailers.

Take heart, however  I did say ‘almost.’  And one of the two rule-breakers was a good one.

So, after watching previews for The Watch, Looper, Total Recall, End of Watch, Gangster Squad and The Bourne Legacy, which are admittedly really good trailers (and all of which you can find on other Before the Movie posts if you want to see them!), but all of which I had seen before, I had begun to give up hope for anything new and exciting.  The first trailer that was new…well, wasn’t all that exciting.  Here it is:

Oz: The Great and Powerful

Release date, March 8, 2013

Starring: James Franco, Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams and Rachel Weisz

Directed by: Sam Rami

How the Wizard arrived in Oz and became the ruler. A prequel to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

Maybe it’s my ambivalence for James Franco, or for almost every adaptation of Alice in Wonderland I have ever seen, but this doesn’t do much for me.  We’ll see.  I guess I kind of like Sam Rami, so it has that going for it.

But, then…then something happened that made the extra 20 minutes I was going to have to hold my pee thanks to the previews worth it for me. The Man of Steel trailer!!!

Man of Steel

Release date, June 14, 2013

Starring: Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Russel Crow and Kevin Costner

A child sent to Earth from a dying planet is adopted by a couple in rural Kansas. Posing as a journalist, he uses his extraordinary powers to protect his new home from an insidious evil.

Yes.  All I can say is, Yes.  I had my doubts but…yes.

Funny… I had zero interest in the Oz-prequel movie until I saw the trailer. I’m a sucker for the Wizard of Oz, and while I share your “meh” feelings on Alice in Wonderland, I have more of an attachment to Oz. I thought “why do a prequel now” until I saw the trailer recently and it piqued my interest.

As for the Man of Steel… I have mixed feelings. They have been pretty mum about it, which could either mean there’s good stuff afoot OR they are terribly embarrassed and don’t want the public to know much until it hits theaters. The way gossip spreads these days, the better kept the secret, the less impressive the secret turns out to be. I hope I’m wrong, though.

I had my doubts as well, but the trailer kind of sold me. Of course, I have an intense attachment to Superman, what with Christopher Reeve being my first crush. :)

I don’t really remember… but my mother used to tell me I liked Sandy Duncan and Winnie from Electric Company (Judy Graubart, I had to look her real name up). I can agree, but I just don’t remember.

I do remember, though, on the Superman front.. I always though young Margot Kidder was pretty.. but I probably only technically would say I “crush”ed on Annette O’Toole from Superman III.

I remember when Smallville first started and everyone was talking about Kristin Kreuk as Lana or whomever the hottie of the week was supposed to be… and I kept thinking it was cool to see Annette again :)

I had no interest in Oz too until the trailer. The Judy Garland film didn’t do it justice. I liked the Syfy Zoe Deschanel take the best. And some of the older silent versions were more faithful but still eh or just really creepy (that one with Oliver Hardy especially). I want a good Oz film, maybe this will be it. I am over Franco too, but the flying monkey scene sold me.

The trailers I got were Jack Reacher, Man of Steel, Oz, and The Campaign (which I will not spend money to see, but it made me giggle and I will eagerly await it on cable).

I still haven’t watched Tin Man. I missed when it was on.. but I imported the Blu-ray from the UK before it finally came out here in the US. Never seem to find the time to sit and watch it, but I like all of the principal players.

As for the Campaign.. Just thinking of Will Ferrell makes me laugh… but admittedly his movies have been hit and miss. I have lost count how many times I’ve watched Talladega Nights… but I wish I could un-watch Step Brothers.
