A Little Somethin’ for the Ladies – British Invasion Ed.
Maybe it’s the accents; maybe it’s the slightly less pretty, rougher-edged features, but something about those fellas from across the pond makes a girl weak in the knees. As the new series (or, ‘season’ to those of us on this side of the Atlantic) of Doctor Who begins, it seems an appropriate time to dedicate one of our estrogen-filled ALSFTL posts to our cousins in the UK.
‘Is There a Doctor in the House’ Winner(s)
David Tennant. He’s tall and gangly, capable of wild mood swings, and has a sort of vague gender-non-specific sensibility that adds mystery to his already deep brown eyes. Plus, as the 10th Doctor Tennent solidly reinvigorated the Doctor Who franchise. And Amen to that.
Matt Smith. Listen, I know he’s kind of strange looking, what with that big ol’ chin and all, but that just adds to his adorkable appeal. The youngest Doctor yet (27 when cast) Smith might be too baby-faced for my taste, except that he brings an undercurrent of gravity to the role that has made him famous. The 900-year-old soul of the Doctor comes through in Smith’s portrayal. I really like this guy.
‘Boy (in the Country) Next Door’ Winner
Martin Freeman. He’s Tim! He’s Watson! He’s Bilbo-freaking-Baggins. He’s just so damn appealing and likable and cute. Plus, he looks like someone you could actually know. I love that.
‘From the UK…Sorta’ Winner(s)
Michael Fassbender. Born in Germany to a German father and Irish mother, raised in Killarney Co, Ireland, Michael Fassbender is a strange mix of handsome, creepy, and enigmatic. He is also wicked talented. Can’t wait to see him in the next X-Men and Prometheus movies (oh yes, they are both happening).
John Barrowman. Don’t let the American accent fool you. John Barrowman, best known to geeks as Captain Jack from Doctor Who and Torchwood, was born in Glasgow, raised in Illinois, and now lives in London. Bex and I had a chance to see him in action at this year’s DragonCon (including a surreal moment when his husband and he both revealed their underwear – Batman and Superman briefs respectively) and he is positively charming. Sparkling blue eyes are just the beginning.
Fan Favorite Winner
Benedict Cumberbatch. The Sherlock star has all the attributes that make the geek-girls swoon, if our Facebook and Twitter followers are any indication. Kind of funny looking, but killer eyes; mad talent; a starring role as a bizarre, brilliant character, and somewhat mysterious sexual orientation. Huzzah!
So, there are about two dozen other fellas that could have easily made the list, but I have to stop somewhere, don’t I? If you are angry your favorite gent didn’t cross my consciousness this morning, you have only yourself to blame. I did ASK for suggestions on Facebook and Twitter. Make sure you’re following us so you can add your two cents to future posts.
Or, just yell at me in comments below.

Stay tuned, Bex will bat again for the other team with ALSFTF Across the Pond Edition.
Sigh, no Anthony S Head, but Martin Freeman- yippy!
I’m appalled I forgot to include A.S.H. Also, a Facebook follower (or, as we like to call him, Dieter) just pointed out that I left off Richard Madden (Rob Stark on GOT, but don’t worry – the actor is in his mid-20s so it’s not creepy). THAT guy is HAWT.
I don’t even watch Dr. Who and think both of them are adorable. I LOVE Martin Freeman–he did a cameo in “What’s Your Number” and he’s just so darn lovable. And of course…Benedict. I’m just gonna say his name and you can infer how much my love extends for him. Fassbender is also a terrific choice!
Fassbender was also suggested by a Facebook follower. I would never have thought of him for this list, as I just assumed he was German. Glad I looked into it
I wasn’t a fan of the show, I thought it got too silly too quick and not in a good way, but Fassbender was in this Brit supernatural show about a witch & demon called Hex. BBC America will be replaying it next week I think.
Freeman did one series (season, whatever) of a show called The Robinsons and he was the son and just adorable in it. If I remember correctly his wife had left him and was trying to lead a more interesting life. It was cute if not a little rough. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0442645/
Thank you for the introductions. As a member of an earlier generation, I like this cliff notes version of things. From what I do know, you’ve nailed them. Or maybe I’m easily influenced by what I read. Actually I think what I mean is that the way you say it is so entertaining that I love saying “PERFECT.”
